Summer Must Haves from Everything Mom and Baby

Wet Bag

Use a dispsoable water diaper on your little one?  It just fills up with water so nothing is absorbed.
It's true, your babe walks into the wading pool and water soaks up and then baby pees and well, it's not absorbed into the diaper.  Would you want to want to wear soggy wet diaper with god know's what kind of chemicals?
Swim Diapers!

Why not try a reusable AMP swim diaper, $16?  It's cheaper to reuse, it's probably more comfortable your child and it keeps the solid waste in.

I've tried Bummis, I've tried Apple Cheeks and Charlie Banana( I wish they made a snap swim diaper!) but over all AMP diaper makes my favorite swim diaper.

Why?

The fit and quality, they are made in my home town Winnipeg, and they come in a beautiful cherry red and a gorgeous royal blue.  2 sizes, Small (6-18pds), Large (15-38pds)  my son is close to 40pds and there is still another row for snaps to fit larger. There's 2 rows with 4 snaps to get the right the fit, Apple Cheeks has 2 rows with 3 snaps and Bummis is velcro but with no elastic for a stretch.

Get your AMP Swim Diaper here

Sun Block!

How do you find the right sun block?  It's either too thick or too greasy, loaded with chemicals and sometimes they don't even have descent UVA/UVB protection!!!

Did I mention I am their only retailer in Ontario?  I'm sure that'll change as I set the trend in finding the best for you all. Just watch!

I researched to find the best sunscreen to bring to my e-store.  I picked Purple Prairie Botanicals based on the ingredients, the reviews from EWG and the UVA/UVB rating of coverage.
From EWG:
Offers Good UVB Protection, Excellent UVA Protection, UVB/UVA Balance: Good, Sunscreen Stability is Excellent, Low Health Concern.

It has a low rating of 1 for toxicity, organic butters and it's not heavily scented, it's not greasy, it's not thick, it blends in easily so your not white as Casper.
I love, love, love the stick and lip balm which is water resistant ($14.99) and my hands don't need to get messy, it glides on easily so it's perfect for a wiggly child and it's safe for infants too!

It has NO health concerns for developmental or reporductive toxicity, it has NO allergies or immunotoxicities .  Learn more and buy here

My little is 14 months old and eats pretty much what we eat, including curry, spicy food, and other ethnic foods. We started offering solids at 6 months (never needed to puree), and she has always had the choice what and how much to eat. She's still nursing, so I know that she won't have any nutritional deficits, and I love that I'm helping her form a healthy attitude towards food and eating! olivia.lasting at *** dot com

Yard Sale for the Cure, May.28 ~ The Breast Cancer Foundation

Monday, May 23, 2011

This particular event hits home to me as a friend of mine was recently diagnosed with breast cancer a year and a half ago.
We met at a mom group and we've clicked ever since.
We've gone for long walks all over the city, shopping and me telling her the next best thing in baby accessories and offering tips on this and that, hence how my blog developed.

She has recovered from this tragic ordeal  for now and I pray it never comes back.  She is amazing!  I don't know how she stayed so strong.
For what she has endured as a young new mother, a new immigrant to Canada, her caring heart and funny, straight forward remarks that no one else gets but me, well other than her husband and other close friends or when she puts her foot in her mouth.  It's one of things I love about her, my only regret is I wish I there for her more. She always put her best face forward and with her joie de vivre personality she was always positive.  She's a lovely person and I am happy to say that Natalya, you are one of the strongest women I know! XOXOXO

Just when you think cuddling with your child couldn't get any better, Little Bambino clothing comes along.

The fit of the Bambino Zip is generous.  It fits my toddler who is 31 months and wears 4T.

Who is Little Bambino?

Friends, Lindsey Marston and  Alisa Smith were sitting on the deck watching their kids play when they came up the idea of the Bambino Zip.
Genious!  I love that moms put this idea together and developed a lovely clothing line for our children.

Beautiful Toronto~ The Cherry Blossom Tree's in High Park

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Nature is beautiful and really does recharge the soul. Take a time out and explore the beauty where you live.  I wanted to share with you the beauty of Toronto, ON where we live.

"People come to visit the park to see these beloved trees as a celebration of Spring as it reflects the old Japanese Tradition of Sakura Hanami, roughly translated as “cherry blossom flower viewing”.
The blooming of High Park’s Sakura trees typically occurs in late April – early May. During the odd spring when Toronto’s winter has been harsh and cold, the trees do not bloom at all because even the most cold tolerant flowering cherry tree species are at their northern limit of bud-hardiness in Toronto."  ~ Source From High Park

How did we end our beautiful walk? At the end of the trail there's this amazing Castle Play Ground!

The Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook {Review & Giveaway}

When I first started feeding Charlie real food it was at the age of 6 months and everything was pureed or steamed for him to explore his food whole.
I have never even heard of Baby-Led weaning until months, months, months after.

I was recently sent this book to review and I never turn down a cook book.  Cook books are one of my favorite things in life yet I rarely get them gifted to me..hmmm.
I liked the recipes in this book.
The Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook is based on self-feeding allowing babies to use their natural abilities to explore taste, texture, colour and smell. It encourages independence and confidence by allowing them to experiment with foods at their own pace and helps to develop hand–eye coordination and chewing.
The Authors
Gill Rapley worked as a health visitor for 20 years and has also been a midwife and breastfeeding counsellor. She initiated the current trend for baby-led weaning after conducting a study as part of her MSc.

Tracey Murkett is a freelance writer who used the baby-led weaning approach to introduce solid food to her own child.
 My thoughts
This book does have great, valuable information and is a great read.  I do recommend you pick it up or look through it to see if it suits you.
I understand the notion of this book, is it for me?  I don't know because I pureed my sons food and I don't think spoons are a bad thing either.  I know there are thousands of parents out there that do Baby-Led weaning so I would like to hear from you!
Why did you choose this way and how has it worked for you?
I think parents need to find what works for their children. Some may like this approach and some may not.

A point that I do agree or see their point of is on pg.3.
"Sucking pureed food from a spoon doesn't prepare babies for chewing; the best way to develop chewing skills is to practice them on food that actually needs chewing-in other words, ordinary, unmashed food."
We know that most 6 months old don't have much for teeth but their gums are super chompers, they do talk about safety in this book and The Gag Reflex.  Gagging is what scares me the most about this although in the book it says baby actually carries on quite happily eating after it has spit out the food causing the gag. Again this book covers everything about Baby-Led Weaning from what to do and not do and what to expect.  There are endless amounts of pictures of babies looking quite happy as they explore the food that is presented to them.

When exploring this way of feeding baby common sense is required as not leaving baby alone with food, not letting anyone except baby put food in their mouth, removing skin, small bones, pits and seeds and to make sure baby is sitting upright and not slouching.

The Recipes
For breakfast classic recipes are suggested such as scrambled eggs, pancakes etc.  The dips and spreads section of this book are fabulous such as Yogurt and Cucumber dip and Bean Spread.

I personally love new ideas when it comes to feeding my son and there is a salad section.  I have never thought to feed him cooked salad.  I recently gave him some of salad and he ended up playing with "the leaf".  The recipes in this book are based on a serving of 2 adults and 1 baby.
Now if you have a toddler as I do these recipes are great  for that which is why I was up to reviewing this book because his chewing skills are in place.

The Book
Full of healthy, delicious meals the whole family will enjoy, and beautifully illustrated throughout, The Baby-led Weaning Cookbook also includes:
  • simple advice on how to start
  • essential at-a-glance information on nutrition and food safety
  • ideas for quick snacks and lunch boxes as well as desserts and family dinners
  • anecdotes and quotes from parents
* Links and other reviews for Baby- Led Weaning can be found here
* Look inside the book here
* BUY IT, click here
Win it!
*Share with us your thoughts about Baby-Led Weaning, what do you do or tell us your baby's favorite recipe or food at the moment. Please comment here on the blog.

As some may know we are Grazes newest retailer of their fabulous reusable sandwich, snack and lunch totes and to celebrate their arrival to the Great White North we're having a give away thanks to the fabulous moms behind Graze Organic.

Well, I loved the design and that they are made in the US, organic cotton and water based inks.

Spring into shape with strollers? But which one?

Monday, May 9, 2011

I have been homeward bound since Friday fighting a nasty cold of sorts and the weather in Toronto has been beautiful but we've been cooped up.

Today was sunny, I didn't get much sleep but I had to take my son out.  He wanted to play soccer and to be honest with winter finally over, my ever expanding butt needed to be out, plus with my son being 2 1/2 yrs old we can run around and have fun and I can burn calories.  He's at the serious age of fun in the sun and he loves playing tag and hide and seek.

The park by my place has a track and as I was kicking the ball with Charlie it got me thinking....I need a jogging stroller or something that can be fun for the both of us as I want...I NEED to drop 40 pds or so.

I thought of just jogging around the track with my son with no stroller but it could get a little difficult as he would go in a different direction and he loves it when we go fast in a stroller...but my Maxi Cosi broke down and there's no way to repair it.  I still have to let them know.  Looking at sites like the ones I have linked are fabulous and it's great for stroller research as there are so many to choose from.  Help!

So we are in the market for a new stroller but which one to go with that can handle bumps and hills as I plan on taking Charlie through the ravine this summer and to well jog. The Ravines in Toronto by my place is gorgeous, it's like a forest in the middle of city.

BOB Gear 2011 Utility Stroller
photo from Cymax
I have my eye on this BOB:
I love the look, the price(free shipping!) and the features seem spot on.

I've heard good things about BOB strollers but I am looking to you guys for advice for activity strollers that can handle the abuse.

I want to get out and run, it's something I used to do in my junior high days and I can't get out to Fit Chicks as we don't have a reliable sitter so instead of investing in a gym member ship with day care I think a new stroller is the way to go so I can enjoy my work out with my son.

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear your advice and thoughts on the strollers.
