We recently had the pleasure to review the Kobo Vox and I had just the right person in mind for this review. My husband.
This is Papa Ash's first review and blog post and definitely not his last on Everything Mom and Baby.
The Kobo Vox is also a winner with modern dads!

I am the perfect example of someone who loves books. Some people may find this a bit hard to understand (my wife included), but I love my bookshelves full of them, I love the feel of them in my hand and I love finishing one with that slightly self-congratulatory smile. On the bookshelf it goes, and on to the next.
Yes, I am the hardest type of person to sell an
eReader to. Yet, just the other day, I found myself extolling the virtues of the
Kobo Vox eReader from
Indigo Book Store to a fellow literary Luddite, and feeling very passionate about converting them to the 21st Century way. How could this have happened? I was late to CD's (still haven't quite figured MP3 players), cell phones and even email. Two weeks with the
Kobo Vox and I'm feeling like I'm finally at the forefront of something big. Here's what I've discovered:
It's as
portable and
convenient as any book, and more so than some giant hardcovers, and the pages don't get all mussed and bent in my valise. (Okay, more like a man purse).
The
back-lighting is a joy. Clipping a light to books is a pain, and the batteries always die at the most inopportune times. Best of all, the glare doesn't bother my wife when she's sleeping (another dubious earmark of my book obsession as far as she's concerned).
The
Kobo Vox can
hold a WHOLE lot of books without the need of more bookshelves - and it doesn't get any heavier! Certainly anyone who's had to move residences with a copious amount of books knows what I mean. And apparently not everyone loves having books as the predominant furniture in the house. Hi honey!
(
side note, Mama Ash here...I don't mind all the books! I just wish we had nicer book shelves and room for all them!)
Here's a beautiful bonus that I wasn't really aware of, but it's
way cheaper to buy eBooks. Got your attention with that one didn't I. New books especially. Like I said above, get to an
Indigo book store (great kids area too) or
order online from
Indigo.ca, one of our favorite places to get books and I do love going to bookstores. Nothing will replace that bookstore smell and spending leisurely time leafing through the fascinating and disparate titles (usually while my wife is at Winners), but heck, you can still buy the books online! And even in the middle of the night! Or on the bus! Or while sitting at the park!
Sometimes when I'm engrossed in a book, a word may come up that I'm unfamiliar with, or have spent many years with a sort of partial, nebulous understanding of (nonplussed anyone?) largely because I haven't been bothered to go find a dictionary and improve my vocabulary. With the
Kobo Vox, the
definition is a mere touch of the finger away. I like that. It also charts your reading progress in about a million different and unique ways, gives little rewards, and allows you to chat with other like-minded folks. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Why just the tip you ask?
Because it is also
tablet! As you may have guessed, I am not the most techno-connected person on the planet, but come on! I can go from reading my book to checking emails, to facebook, to surfing the web without moving an inch. Anywhere, anytime. Remember, I am a person who wouldn't walk four steps to grab a dictionary. Neat things just keep popping up everytime I use it.
Will I give up my books altogether? No. But I never thought I'd be trying to convert other book lovers either. The
Kobo Vox is the perfect enhancer to the book loving experience!
And by the way, 'nonplussed' means 'completely perplexed'. I'm no longer nonplussed.
