Ideal foods for Mothers, expecting Mothers and Children
As some of you may know I am currently pregnant with baby #2 and #3 and when I found out I was carrying twins, besides other panicking thoughts like we need to move, how am I going to do this and all the new things we'll need my diet was my true first thought.  What should I eat? Do I eat more? What quality foods can I find on the market and what snacking foods can I easily toss in my bag and go?

Thankfully I already know about PRANA, a Canadian company that offers the finest in organic and vegan products/produce.  Their website has so many amazing products and delicious recipes.  Which I needed help with because when I got some of the delicious products mentioned below I didn't know what to do with it! PRANA was so kind to send me these goodies to help me along my pregnancy when they heard I was expecting.

Here are some things PRANA has put together for all moms to consider adding to  their diets.
As an expecting mom I will go into the benefits of such products.

Why are Omega-3 fatty acids important in pregnancy?
They are critical for fetal neurodevelopment and is also important during breast feeding as well.  You want to consume good healthy fats for baby's brain and early eye development.  Omega's also help to reduce heart disease.  You should get about 200-300mg a day of Omega 3's.  source can be found here
The products listed below are a nice alternative to fish if you can't stand the smell or don't eat fish.
Sources for Omega 3's: Organic cold pressed Chia Oil, Organic Black Chia Seeds, Organic European Pumkin Seeds.
Why do I need Lauric Acid if I'm pregnant or a new mom?
Coconut oil contains Lauric Acid.  It helps with stabilizing hormones, it's a great alternative to other cooking oils.  It also increases Lauric Acid in breast milk.  Get your Coconit oil!
Lauric acid found in coconut oil and breast milk has been found to have antiviral, antibacterial and parasiticidal (kills parasites) properties that support proper immune function.  Read more here...
I can honestly say I had no idea on how important Lauric Acid is in pregnancy! I'll be adding their coconut oil to every smoothie I make!
Sources for Lauric Acid: Organic Raw Coconut Oil
Do I need to up my Calcium intake?
YES! This kinda freaks me out.... "If you don't get enough calcium in your diet when you're pregnant, your baby will draw it from your bones, which may impair your own health later on." babycenter.com
Besides healthy bones it's also important for babies heart health and to develop blood clotting abilities. It may also prevents Pre-Eclampsia for pregnant mothers. Read more about per-eclampsia and calcium benefits here.
Sources for Calcium: Organic Raw Almonds, Organic European Pumpkin Seeds, Organic White
Tell me more about Folic Acid...
Well it's part of the B vitamin family, it's also known as Folate.  Folic acid also helps in the development of the baby's neural tube development.  It may prevent Spina Bifida.  It is also suggested that if you're trying to get pregnant you up your Folic Acid intake a month before.  Add some sunflower seeds to your cereal!
Source of Folic Acid: Organic Raw Sunflower Seeds
Why do I need more Iron if I'm expecting?
You need extra iron for your placenta! Also as your body develops more blood you need the hemaglobin and Iron helps develop hemaglobin.
Back to the placenta, iron is needed for proper placenta development and prevention of pre-term and low birth weight babies. So start munching on.....

Do I need more Vitamin C?
Well your best bet is to get it from fruits and vegetables not via supplements.  Just add some of the below to your diet for safe amounts and delicious nutritious snacks.  You only need 80-85mg while pregnant.
Sources of Vitamin C: Organic, pitted Apricots, Organic White Mulberries
In addition Organic Gogi Berries is a super berry that helps assimilation of vit.C

Just for kids!  Okay...for Moms too!

Lucuma Powder, a sweetener with a low glycemic index (Rich in Iron, Fiber, Vitamins A & C)
and Chia Seeds(a source of Omega 3's, fiber, protein).   It's great when mixed in with nut milks or any other liquids to make a soft Chia pudding in minutes.
For the Choco-Chia Pudding recipe, pop over to this link.  We're also really liking the Lucuma Banana smoothie, get the recipe here.
