We discovered our new favourite resort located in beautiful Muskoka. Severn Lodge. What can I say about Severn Lodge? Hmmm….well. Serenity is one. It was like a breath of fresh air when I walked up to the main lodge to check in. It had such a different vibe than our first spot which was at Blue Mountain. I’ll be honest- I prefer Severn Lodge. It was almost magical, I wish I could put the words together. We had just left the hype and buzz from Blue Mountain, the drive to Severn Lodge was beautiful as we took the back country roads. As I walked up I could hear laughter, splashing, families together, laughter. THE VIEW! It was like, “Yeah. This is where we should be.” It’s a short ride from Toronto, taking only 90 minutes to get to this haven.
Severn Lodge is an all-inclusive family resort. Open from the Spring to the Fall, Mid-May to Mid-October. It is one of the few remaining historical resorts found in the Muskoka county. It had the vintage appeal, it felt good- the energy there is good. I felt as though I should be talking like Katherine Hepburn as I lounged on the long chair sipping on my cocktail as the kids splashed about. To me, it had a 30’s-40’s feel.
We booked their Waterfront property which came with two queen beds and a pull out couch. It was clean and our sleep was very good. Good beds. There is A/C, you get free WIFI with your own code to use, TV and the view! No hidden charges. Oh, the view, how I miss it. With your booking, food is included and the food was delicious, more on that later. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. For two nights you’re looking at around $1400. There’re a few rooms to choose from and cottages. Everything is given to you at check-in from what time dinner is, breakfast and the BBQ lunch to your own WIFI.
What to do at Severn Lodge:
We saw snakes, frogs, butterflies, chipmunks, fish-it was a city kid’s dream. My kids were ecstatic. Did I mention that there is also a free Kids Camp? You can even hire a babysitter(straight up $15/hr). I gotta give a big shout out to Taylor. We miss you, Taylor!
Kids Camp– My son went off looking for frogs, snakes and other things you can find in the swamp and the twins went off with Taylor and the girls for a beauty spa day. They got their nails painted and had a cucumber mask on their face. They did a little fashion show walking around the lodge which was adorable. At the end, the kids had a great water balloon fight. Every morning you can check to see what they are doing for Kids Camp. Lots of water play too. I was so happy to see my son swim and Taylor helped him a lot. He got on to the trampoline and jumped to his hearts content while the twins and I played on the beach to swimming in the pool. My son made friends too and the Game Room is great with a ping pong table, fooze ball and air hockey. You can play volleyball on the beach or build sand castles to fishing off the dock. I did ask my son what was his favourite part about Severn Lodge and he said it was paddle boating with his dad. The activities at Severn Lodge are endless as you can check out more at Severn Lodge.
There’s a sea-doo you can enjoy, lots of Muskoka chairs to read and sunbathe on while you can get a cocktail at the bar. Patrick is a gem and great bartender. Lot’s of stories and great at making drinkies for us adults 😉 I love genuine people and everyone there was just so true, pleasant and professional.
Now, if you know me you’ll know I love Eatons. My childhood spent a good part there shopping with my mom. After ballet on Saturday’s we’d go to the fancy restaurant and I’d have my French Onion Soup. Eatons was such a great department store so when I saw that Severn Lodge owned Timothy Eatons 22’ Ditchburn mahogany motor launch that was crafted in 1922 for Lady Eaton, wife of Sir Timothy Eaton and founder of the Eaton Department Stores, how could I not go on it? There is an additional charge for the tour.
Did I mention the old school play structure? So cool, haha. Love it. #vintage
Now let’s talk dinner service. Walking to the main lodge is a short walk. Isn’t it lovely to look at? Our dinner was scheduled at 6:20 and it truly is a fine, country dining.
It’s all families here which were just wonderful. You walk into the dining lounge and they are happy to see you. We are offered a starter, the main meal and dessert. On Wednesdays and Fridays, kids have a lovely dinner buffet. But they can order off the main menu as well. Have a peak for the kids. On my first night(my menu), I enjoyed an Alaskan Fish and Crab cake followed by a delicious Filet of Halibut from British Columbia. The next night was equally as delicious. At Severn Lodge, Executive Chef, Hubert Obermeier makes every attempt to use fresh local ingredients in season and feature such local specialities as walleye and game meats. The next night I had the most delicious tasting rack of lamb a la Madagascar. It was just as good as the last time I had lamb which was at Vineland Estates. I’d forgotten how much I love lamb. The quality and dining were upscale but family friendly.
Looking back at the pictures and writing this post has me all fuzzy and warm as I am wearing my Severn Lodge t-shirt. Even my husband bought one and he got one for the kids. On our last night, we hired a sitter(Taylor). The twins went straight to bed after dinner so Charlie got to hang out with Taylor as my husband and I bought a bottle of wine and headed to the Regatta to listen to Muskoka musician, Kenny Munshaw.
What a great way to end our stay at Severn Lodge. Swimming, pool play, delicious food and wine, entertainment, the kids, the families, the quietness as well. Couples there as well enjoying the scene, not just families. If you are new to hearing about Severn Lodge or have heard but never have been, this is probably the best resort I’ve had the honour to review and you should book it for your next family vacation. There’s really nothing negative to say.
