With our first summer back in Winnipeg and with COVID we were looking for something close to home for a staycation but “where oh where?” I know! Gimli! A short drive that’s just over an hour will take you to Lake Winnipeg to a quaint little town called Gimli. Also known as New Iceland and the place to stay at is the Lakeview Gimli Resort.
Upon checking in there was hand sanitizer, a plexiglass wall when chatting with resort employees and placements mats on where to stand to check-in. We felt safe at the Lakeview Gimli Resort and we couldn’t wait to have fun and check out the town and the resort amenities. I figured this would be as close to Iceland as we could get! Not only are their great family specials on now, but Lakeview Gimli Resort is pet friendly too. There is a small fee of $15.
First things first, let me show you our huge suite! It was a 2 bdrm located in the newer part of the resort and it had a kitchenette, dining room and a sofa bed. It was perfect for my family of 5. Head to my stories on Instagram to get the tour. I always sound so awkward, lol when I do live streaming and my voice, UGH! Anyways here’s a snippet of pics. With our spacious two-room suites featuring separate living and sleeping areas, a king-size bed, a double hide-a-bed sofa, work table, wet bar, two TVs (in the bedroom and living area) and microwave.
#LakeviewGimliResort offers the perfect place to get away on the shores of Lake Winnipeg! #exploreMB #staycation #familytravel #gimli #localtravel #manitoba Click To Tweet
The kid’s rooms. Spacious clean and awesome! It came with a desk, closet and full-size dresser. Our master suite(feature picture) had our own bathroom with a stand-up shower, tv and BluRay, king bed and a great balcony with a view of Lake Winnipeg.
The living room with a fantastic Samsung TV that had a great picture and worked! You know how you go to some hotels and resorts and cable is limited or you need an engineer to show you how to start the tv? No? Just me? Okay then! Well, this was great. As I unpacked the kids watched cartoons. It truly is a home away from home.
The bathroom was clean and spacious. Very nicely done with nice products from Bath & Bodyworks to use and a jacuzzi tub which was great because the hot tub was closed in the resort due to COVID.
Loved the open space layout of our suite with a spacious kitchen and dining room. Cook in your own suite if you’d like. Everything is there for you.
Let’s visit the amenities! A very clean and organized gym can be used with sanitizer and evenly spaced out. There are 2 treadmills, weights, a bicycle and a chin-up/weight machine and a TV.
A fantastic pool with a beach view of Lake Winnipeg. We spent a lot of time here! It was fun and I think it’s a great family-friendly pool as the deepest end was 1.5 metres and shallow at .9 metres(3ft) as you can see. All pool areas are subjected to 50% occupancy and enhanced cleaning and sanitizing policies as per the guidelines set out by the province of Manitoba.
Oh and there’s an outdoor pool too 😉 Same measurements as the indoor and deepness. I loved sitting in the outdoor pool with my kids and looking at the lake as well. My kids had such a GREAT time!
Lakesview Gimli Resort is located right in the heart and soul of Gimli. You can walk right along the boardwalk, go to the beach, head to the Viking Museum, the Viking Park, the Glider statue, the Gimli Art Club, the Gimli Sea Wall is a beautiful walk with the family and to look at the marina, the infamous H.P. Tergensens for shopping(it has been there since the late 1800s). The resort also has great little shops within.
At #LakeviewGimliResort w/ a beautiful beach just steps away from your room, you’ll wonder why you’re not here more often. Enjoy some peace and quiet or an exciting adventure in Gimli, an Icelandic town full of history. #exploreMB #gimli… Click To Tweet
Lakeview Gimli Resort can be seen on the left across the street from more restaurants for Thai and the famous Kris Fish & Chips.
So what about the food? What is it like at Lakeview Gimli Resort?
Imagine sitting on the patio overlooking Lake Winnipeg in a relaxing atmosphere where ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible. Interlake dining at Seagulls is fantastic! At the Lakeview, you have the Pier Pub for that pub atmosphere where tables are spaced apart as they follow the Health Regulations and at Seagulls too. The Pier Pub has a sweet little patio and Seagulls Restaurant. Both cater to the same menu. At Seagulls you can choose to dine in the dining room or beachfront patio and reservations are highly recommended. The staff always had a smile and food came out within great time. I truly enjoyed everything I ate. From the fresh Lake Winnipeg pickerel fish & chips to my Signature Seagulls salad with pickerel. I had to get my pickerel fix in! The kid’s menu is great too and their burgers are Ah-mazing! They offer vegetarian/vegan meals and gluten-free options as well. 50% occupancy and enhanced cleaning and sanitizing policies will be in effect at all times so you can enjoy safely.
The Pier Pub has a delicious and well-curated cocktail list. Keeping with the Icelandic theme as the town is based on Icelanders my favourite cocktail was Loki Lemonade. Vodka, strawberry juice and Sprite. It’s so good! They also have a great wine list and local beer as well.
My son LOVED the cheeseburger served a delicious brioche bun($14). The twins had Mini Pogo’s($5) from the kids menu and loved those as well. Fresh cut fries!
At #LakeviewGimliResort, choose from their extensive menu with a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, pastas, and entrees, each of which has their own unique touch. #exploreMB #travelManitoba #Gimli #staycation Click To Tweet
My husband loves a good creamy Fettucine and this was very, very, very good with grilled chicken breast. ($17)
Freshly caught and beer-battered fish and chips($17) were a hit with me and the kids.
My favourite breakfast did not disappoint at Seagulls Restaurant. Delicious Eggs Benny($12) where you can choose to have with back bacon or smoked salmon
My husband had the Steak & Eggs($17) and it was cooked to perfection. 7 oz AAA strip loin steak with 2 eggs & homestyle hashbrowns
Pancakes and waffles($5.50) for the kids!
Seagulls Signature Salad (1/2) with candied cashews, artisan lettuce tossed in a honey dijon/ginger vinaigrette with avocados, feta and pan-seared pickerel. ($16) with the loveliest rosé wine!
Oh man, that was good looking through all these photos and seeing the delicious food. Can you not picture yourself visiting this resort? My husband was thoroughly impressed with Lakeview Gimli Resort so much so he found it better than Blue Mountain back in Ontario! He loved the room, he was impressed with its location, the staff and so much more. This will be our Gimli spot as it’s the perfect resort north of Winnipeg. After dinner, we went for a walk along the sea wall, sat on the beach and skipped rocks. It was the perfect 2-night stay!
